The idea behind this novel is quite ... novel! Although I guessed the secret one of the M/Cs has half way through the book, it was still very interesting to see how it played out. Not often does a novel come from the villain's point of view. I appreciated the complexity of emotions running throughout the novel: how one can skew it and make it quite relatable and relevant today. Short of it: an individual should be taken on his/her own merits ... not the merits (or lack thereof) of a group of individuals. At times I did want to slap one of the M/Cs for believing what another told him but then again, I sometimes want to do that in real life, too (basically, I believe all people are inherently good ... society and/or what they learn can turn them). The novel doesn't exactly preach: the characters make their way into a more positive situation by the end. By the way the epilogue goes, I take it the author doesn't plan a second novel ... but I think there's plenty there to continue with one more ... society doesn't turn good per the say of one man! Unfortunately .... This was an excellent novel: I like the way the author writes ... his word choices are spot on, even when I have to look them up. There's an intellect here I don't find in a lot of other M/M novels.Product details

There are times different is good. Other times, different can be...not so good. In the case of From the Ashes, the first book in the urban fantasy Fires of Redemption series from Xen Sanders, different blew my mind. Whether as Xen Sanders or Cole McCade, this author has never ceased to leave me fascinated with his seemingly immeasurable capacity to weave a unique story that demands I immerse myself fully or lest I find myself not being able to enjoy it at its optimum. With this series starter, Sanders introduces readers to aberrants--individuals who look human but are born with a genome that gives them otherworldly powers, making humans fear them and slap them with a variety of labels villains, psychopaths, sociopaths, etc. Aberrants rush to support the cause of Lord High General Infernus Blaze, but From the Ashes is the story of his twenty-five-year-old son Spark, who is currently using the persona of Tobias Rutherford, a graduate student at UC Berkeley. Tobias has always known what his sole purpose it, but when he engaged his professor, Dr. Sean Archer, he begins to question. Will the questions lead to the continuing destruction of the human world as his father sees fit, or will Tobias find a new purpose for himself?
I'm not going to give any additional details as to what the story is about or how it plays out. I'm seriously recommending you head into the book knowing only the synopsis provided or what little I've mentioned here in my review. This is the kind of tale that you need to experience as it plays out. Don't skim, don't go straight to the end and take a peek. Read. The. Book! I promise, you won't regret it. If you're hesitant to read an M/M novel because you've never read one before, let this be your first. This story isn't about either of the main character's sexuality. Yes, it's an urban fantasy, but there are parallels to events in history and what's currently going on in the world. It's too easy for us to label those who are different from us and see them as aberrations. We tend to fear those we don't understand. More often than not, people who are labeled and told what's expected of them feel as if they have no choice but to be exactly what the rest of the world expects them to be. From the Ashes is a fantastical tale, but the beauty of this novel lies in that feeling of familiarity, whether in a character or the story itself. And maybe, by the end, it'll give you something to really think about. From the Ashes receives five-plus stars. ♥
A superhero story that examines the villain's point of view without ever excusing their behavior. At heart this is a well-done romance that also examines those deepest, darkest parts of ourselves and the choices we make to either embrace or diffuse the darkness inside.
This is an early work of the author's, "remastered," if you will.
The story hits me where I live people with unusual, rare powers struggle against prejudice, and our protagonist is caught in a unique spot regarding good versus evil and his lack of choice in the matter. Having read Shatterproof just recently, Sanders' progress in writing skill is obvious, but From the Ashes is very good, and I'm glad to have read it.
Minor quibbles; one sex scene struck me as improbable, and there's a little repetition here and there within paragraphs. A stronger ending would've earned a fifth star from me.
Another fantastic antihero by this author. If you like superheroes, and particularly complex, broody supervillains who are struggling to find love and humanity within themselves, look no further. Tobias offers a fascinating look into the mind of a so-called monster, and Sean is the perfect foil to his destructive tendencies. The plot and twists had me on the edge of my seat, and at the same time I was weeping from Tobias' childhood memories growing up in Thailand. The Southeast Asian representation in this book was spot on, and I cannot tell you enough how important this is, even in small, subtle doses as it was in this book. Highly recommended!
Well, I always love a good redemption story. Gorgeously written, as always. More fun than I expected. At first I thought that was because I recently read C. B. Lee's "Not Your Villian" and "Not Your Sidekick" and those kept coming to mind as I read this. But there was also something over the top about this that kept tickling me. And when I went to reread it, to figure out what that was, I saw it was written into every paragraph, this dry humor. I was trying to find a good quote but I just got sucked back in, chuckling to myself.
But behind that humor, the struggle. How do we stand in relation to our parents, especially when they've hurt us, and yet that's the only reality we know. Whew.
